Stricter rules for online marketplaces

The European Parliament on Thursday adopted stricter rules to protect consumers when shopping online. Online marketplaces will have to work more closely with market regulators in the future to quickly take dangerous products out of circulation.

The EU states still have to approve the rules, but this is considered a formality. In addition, products manufactured outside the EU must must in future have an "economic operator" based in the EU as a contact for safety issues. In the case of recalls be offered at least two remedies, such as repair, replacement or reimbursement, even if the legal warranty has expired.

The new rules are intended to improve consumer safety when shopping online.
