It is common for errors to occur when making payments for fees, fines, or invoices. This often happens due to issues with transmitting recipient data, amounts, or customer references.
The consequence is incorrect payment transactions, which result in increased time and resource consumption for the biller. But it doesn't have to be this way. With GiroCode, payments can be processed quickly and easily today — completely digitally through a banking app on your smartphone, simply by scanning a QR code.
Integrated Barcode and QR Code Framework as Open Source in Smartstore
Since the release of version 5.0.1, Smartstore has a complete barcode and QR code framework as open source. Developers can use this framework to create innovative services for their customers and implement custom processes.
This is how payment with GiroCode works: GiroCode resembles a conventional QR code and is printed on the paper receipt, such as a fee notice, parking ticket, or invoice. The GiroCode contains all necessary information for paying the invoice, such as the recipient, IBAN, BIC, amount, and purpose. By scanning the QR code, this data is automatically transferred to the mobile banking app.
The invoice recipient settles the payment with a few clicks on their smartphone: open the banking app, scan the QR code, authorize the transfer! All you need is a banking app that can read and process these QR codes.
For billers, this means that their customers create a transfer directly with the information from the GiroCode. In particular, the complete purpose, including invoice or reference numbers, is adopted. This means fewer booking errors, less post-processing, and significant resource savings.
GiroCode also offers many advantages for municipalities:
- Faster receipt of payments through easy payment
- Error-free transmission of transfer data
- Resource conservation by minimizing erroneous transfers
- Higher customer satisfaction
- Quick and easy integration
- Usable both digitally and analogously (e.g., on a receipt)

Digitalization poses major challenges for municipalities. As pillars of our society, municipalities enable citizens to participate directly in the community. Therefore, the expectations for cities, towns, and districts in the field of digitalization are particularly high. Studies by the D21 Initiative illustrate the population's requirements for digital municipal administration. Citizens expect reliability, efficiency, and access to all public services, whether it's applying for an ID card or accessing cultural, sports, and educational offerings.
Cultural and leisure facilities also face the challenge of adapting to digital needs. Mobile internet access has already brought conveniences such as easy and fast payments or the seamless connection of the online and offline worlds, which citizens are increasingly accustomed to. These advantages are now also expected in other areas of life. Swimming pools, zoos, museums, theaters, and city events, therefore, need new concepts to provide the desired service to citizens and remain attractive to people of all ages. Digital ticketing is an important component for modernizing cultural and leisure offerings.
The development of a Smart Region affects not only utilities but also offers great potential. For example, simpler coordination of waste disposal requests could be achieved through a central and user-friendly management tool. There is also room for digital concepts in the billing process for municipal utilities and waste management companies. Well-thought-out payment processing is of great importance for all payment processes in the utility industry. In addition, there are many other areas of application in municipalities, utilities, waste management companies, justice, healthcare facilities, tourism, public educational institutions, local retail, and many other areas of public welfare.

Important Note: GiroCode is a payment system introduced in Germany. It is based on the German standard for electronic payment transactions and is primarily designed for national use.
However, similar payment systems exist in other European countries based on the same principle, such as the SEPA QR code. This QR code can be used for payments in various European countries.
However, it should be noted that the acceptance and distribution of GiroCode or similar payment systems may vary in other EU countries. It is recommended to inquire about the availability and possible uses in the respective country in advance.
